COLUMBUS BASE MEETING MINUTES
3 February 2018
Call to Order:
1300 – Commander, Tim Barker called the meeting to order.
COB John Bethea led in the salute to the flag.
Chaplain Walt Fleak gave the invocation.
Tolling of the lost boats was conducted by Chaplain Sharon Lloyd and John Bethea.
Welcome to all by Base Commander.
There were 22 members and guests present.
2018 Officer Swear in by Chaplain:
Chaplain Sharon Lloyd swore in the following officers:
Tim Barker, Commander
Jim Tolson, Vice Commander
Scott Steele, Secretary
Commander Tim Barker appointed Jim “Clutch” Koogler as base Treasurer.
Chaplain Sharon Lloyd swore Jim in as the base Treasurer.
January 2018 meeting minutes are posted on the web site. There were no changes.
Correspondence – None.
Jim Koogler reported on the status of the Treasury accounts through the end of January 2018.
No report given. Cliff was out with the flu .
Chaplain Sharon Lloyd passed a card around for Don Crinky. Sharon also talked to Don. She said he sounded good but Don said he is weak from the Chemo treatments.
It was mentioned that Cliff had the flu and everyone agreed it was the right call for Cliff not to attend the meeting.
Master Chief Brian Domask was in attendance and will be heading to San Diego for his next duty.
Mike Hogan who served on the USS Whale (SSN-638). Mike will become a member of the base.
James Motley was not in attendance but does plan on being at the next meeting.
All members in attendance introduced themselves and told a little bit about their time in the Submarine Service.
Galin mentioned the Submariners RVers group that he is a member.
March 3 – Noon Base Meeting, American Legion Leasure-Blackston 239, 700 Morning Street, Worthington, OH 43085
April 7 – Submarine Birthday/Tolling Ceremony – VFW Hilliard. Jim Tolson asked if there were any preference for the food.
Inventory Status – The inventory of the museum articles continues.
Frank is finding a lot of personal items in the inventory.
Mike Thurston mentioned that at the last eagle scout presentation he performed that the young man receiving the award is planning on going into the submarine service.
Frank thanked everyone for the shipmate of the year award. He was very honored.
For the good of the Order:
2018 Membership - $35 check for USSVI & Base. $10 for base only to Treasurer.
There are currently 72 members of the base.
Status of the parade sub paint repair – Rick / Galin – Rick talked to Freightliner. Rick mentioned that there is currently no room at Freightliner to store the boat until they are ready to do the repairs so it is currently at Dave’s. Galin said the boat is developing cracks and is worried the boat might not be ready by parade season.
Update on VA February 12-16 activities at 420 N James Rd., Columbus 43219 – Rick Freeman. Rick passed out a flier with the information for the festivities planned for the 2018 National Salute to Veteran Patients Week at the VA hospital. Rick would like to have the boat displayed for the event and also have some information about the Columbus Base to hand out to those interested. He mentioned he had some tickets to the National Salute Dinner & Dance Concert being held at the Villa Milano on February 14th or you can pick them up at 280 E. Broad Street.
2018 USSVI Convention cruise – Oct 21-28, 2018 www.ussvicruise.com/ As of 12JAN18, 282 have signed up including Todd VanKirk & Bill Anderson.
Menu planning for April 7 Tolling / Birthday dinner is in progress. Payment to Columbus Base can be made today for $22/meal or you can mail it to the Base Treasurer.

Clutch mentioned that the USS Columbus (SSN-762) had a change of command back in September.
Cmdr. Peter French relieved Capt. Albert Alarcon as the commanding officer of Columbus.
Jim Tolson mentioned a new book called “Poopie Suits and Cowboy Boots” that he is trying to get a good link to order. Once he has a good link for the book he will send it out to the base.
Storekeeper Frank Lloyd. Frank has some charts of all the submarines that he was asking $5.00 or a donation.
50/50 drawing – Walt Fleak won the 50/50.
