COLUMBUS BASE MEETING MINUTES
8 September 2018
Call to Order:
1300 – Commander, Tim Barker called the meeting to order.
COB John Bethea led in the salute to the flag.
Chaplain Sharon Lloyd gave the invocation.
Tolling of the lost boats was conducted by Chaplain Sharon Lloyd and COB John Bethea.
Welcome to all by Base Commander.
There were 18 members and guests present.
o August 2018 meeting minutes are posted on the web site. There were no changes.
o Correspondence – Clutch presented two pieces of correspondence.
One from the VA Ambulatory Care Center thanking the base for the donations of coffee and two decks of cards.
The other piece of correspondence was from Commander James Prouty, CO of the Columbus NOSC, inviting the base to the Annual Navy Birthday Ball.
o Jim Koogler reported on the status of the Treasury accounts through the end of August 2018.
o Web site is up and running.
o Dave O’Carroll and Joann were both in the hospital. Joann had cancer in her pancreas and gout in her legs and feet. Dave was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
o Bill Wright has cancer in his esophagus but is very optimistic.
o Walt Fleak had achilles tendon operation and is not allowed to walk.
o Bob Frier is dealing with stomach issues.
o Jim and Karla were in attendance and thanked the base for all their prayers.
o New Columbus Base member John “JW” Wegman was in attendance and introduced himself. JW and his wife Mary live in Canal Winchester. JW was a TM2(SS). He qualified on the USS Lewis & Clark (SSBN-644) in 1968.
o After JW’s introduction those in attendance introduced themselves.
o John Fox lives in Hilliard Assisted Living #226, 4303 Truman Blvd. He fell and has broken his leg twice. He is open to having visitors. John’s cell phone number is (614)519-9246.
o November 9 (Friday) – Columbus Veterans’ Day parade.
o November 11 (Sunday) – Logan Veterans’ Day parade.
o October 6 - 1200 Base Meeting, American Legion Leasure-Blackston 239, 700 Morning Street, Worthington, OH 43085
Inventory Status – Frank has information on someone who buys old books and will be
contacting him to see if he would like any of the books in the inventory.
For the good of the Order:
o Bob provided a wish list of items for Kapss4Kids. Clutch will distribute the list to the base (see pdf attachment). Individuals can donate items on the list if they feel so lead but this is strictly voluntary. Bob asked that the items donated be new and not used. Bob said that they are looking at November 6th or 7th as the next visit to Children’s Hospital Outpatient clinic. They are expecting to reach my kids at the Outpatient Clinic.
o Eagle Scouts nothing new to report.
o 2018 USSVI Convention cruise – Oct 21-28, 2018 www.ussvicruise.com/.
o USSVI National election in process now. Includes voting for USSVI National Commander, Sr Vice commander, Jr. Vice commander, Treasurer and Secretary. Also, Central Region Commander. All candidates for all above offices are running unopposed. Also, on the ballot is the proposal to combine national constitution and bylaws into one single document.
o Honor Flight 5K run is Saturday 22 September. We have again been asked to help put up flags before the race, and take them down after the race. Volunteers can let Bill Anderson know. He will provide directions.
o Food for base meetings was discussed. Our sub caterer will be unable to provide subs for at least the next 2 meetings. A vote was taken by those in attendance to have croissant sandwiches from Costco at the meetings.
Open discussion from floor
o Bob McDaniel asked for donations of old eye glasses for the Hilliard Lions Club that supports the Ohio State Optometry mission trips.
o Bill Anderson is checking on the sub that is in for repairs. Taking a little longer than expected.
o Rick said that the sub trailer will need new tires and rims. It was mentioned that maybe the trailer parks may have some.
o If you want a USSVI calendar you need to contact Frank Lloyd and let him know.

o 50/50 drawing – Bill McConkle won the 50/50.
