COLUMBUS BASE MEETING MINUTES
6 May 2017
Call to Order:
1300 – Commander, Tim Barker called the meeting to order.
COB John L. Bethea led in the salute to the flag.
Chaplain Walt Fleak gave the invocation.
Tolling of the lost boats was conducted by Chaplain Sharon Lloyd and COB John L. Bethea.
Welcome to all by Base Commander.
There were 20 members and guests present.
April 2017 meeting minutes are posted on the web site. There were no changes.
Correspondence – none.
Jim Koogler reported on the status of the Treasury accounts through the end of April 2017.
Cliff is working on the 2017 Sailing list.
Bill McCorkle tumor in bladder was removed waiting for report.
Anna Shaffer doing good after knee surgery.
No new members or guests were in attendance.
May 27 – Saturday, Flags on Graves at Resurrection Cemetery, 1330.
May 29 – Monday Worthington Memorial Day parade, 1000 step off. Galin will be pulling the boat. There will be twenty-six World War II honorees.
June 3– Noon Base Meeting, American Legion Leasure-Blackston 239, 700 Morning Street, Worthington, OH 43085
July 4 – Upper Arlington Parade.
July Base Meeting will be held on July 8th.
Frank will be continuing the inventory of the Columbus submarine museum articles.
Would like to see if he could sell some stamps, that he found while doing the inventory, to provide some income for the base.
Cliff’s neighbor has inventoried three boxes for a community service project and will be getting more.
Dave O’Carroll had a post card from the VA stating that the VA urgent care center will be open on the weekends 0800 to 1600.
For the good of the Order:
There is a temporary moratorium on adding new associate members unless they are military veterans.
This is being done until USSVI regains War Veteran Status
Clutch, Frank and Sharon attended Denver Smith’s Memorial. Denver was the last World War II sub veteran of the base
NJROTC awards at Franklin Heights May 10 (Barker), 1730 Auditorium and Central Crossing HS NJROTC May 10 (Koogler)
May 27 – Flags on Graves, 1330, Koogler
May 1 – Kap(SS) 4 Kids(SS), McDaniel, Anderson presented to 9 patients.
May 13 – Honor Flight preparations begin at 0345. Return home 2030. Rules change being discussed that guardians should be 65 or younger.

John Bethea brought a coffee cup with the inscription “Pride Runs Deep” would like to auction off or do a raffle.
Charles Sabino found articles of his dad’s such as his college fee card and other memorabilia.
George Petershagen talked about a Markers Mark distillery trip. He also mentioned that Vic Vanhorn could custom make items similar to the submarine plaque he presented to the base at last months dinner. Charges around $75.00

50/50 drawing. Walt Fleak was the winner of the 50/50.
