COLUMBUS BASE MEETING MINUTES 5 May 2018
Call to Order:
1300 – Commander, Tim Barker called the meeting to order.
COB John Bethea led in the salute to the flag.
Chaplain Sharon Lloyd gave the invocation.
Tolling of the lost boats was conducted by Chaplain Sharon Lloyd and COB John Bethea.
Welcome to all by Base Commander.
There were 18 members and guests present.
April 2018 Birthday Dinner and Tolling Ceremony meeting minutes are posted on the web site. There were no changes.
Correspondence – None.
Jim Koogler reported on the status of the Treasury accounts through the end of April 2018.
The hosting site Flickr for the web site’s picture was bought by SmugMug. This may increase the cost of the web site.
Jim Tolson has started treatment. One of the side effects of the treatment causes Jim to be extremely tired. Sharon received an email from Karla saying they are taking it one step at a time.
Don Crinkey is doing good. He has finished his first round of Chemo.
It was good to have Dave O’Carroll at the meeting after having his hip replacement.
It was also good to have Bob Frier at the meeting and doing well after his illness.
Jerry Miller was in attendance after hearing about the Columbus base through the American Legion Post.
Richard Doritty was in attendance. Richard is an Air Force veteran and his uncle Raymond Doritty was on the USS Sailfish (SS-192).
May 26 – Saturday, Flags on Graves at Resurrection Cemetery 1330.
May 28 – Monday, Worthington Memorial Day parade, 1000 step off.
June 2 – 1200 Base Meeting, American Legion Leasure-Blackston 239, 700 Morning Street, Worthington, OH 43085
July 4 – Upper Arlington parade in the morning and Plain City Parade in the afternoon.
o Inventory Status – Frank discover multiple envelopes with commemorative stamps on them that he is planning to put online and sell.
For the good of the Order:
o It was announced that the VA had an Open House at Wylie Clinic on Saturday May 5th and Sunday May 6th.
o Status of the parade sub paint repair – Rick / Galin – Galin called Dave to confirm that he had taken the sub over to Freightliner.
Rick will be checking with Freightliner to find out when the repairs will be made. Galin has the bell and other float materials.
o NJROTC award at Franklin Heights Tuesday, May 8, 2018 and Tim Barker will be presenting. On Thursday, May 10, 2018 an NJROTC award will be presented at Central Crossing and Jim Koogler will be presenting.
o 2018 USSVI Convention cruise – Oct 21-28, 2018 www.ussvicruise.com/ As of 23FEB18, 372 have signed up
including Todd VanKirk. Galin Brady could be attending.
o Kaps4Kids – June 7th at 1330 in the main lobby of Children’s Hospital. Volunteers are needed and wearing their hats and vest is encouraged.
o Eagle Scout Presentation on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Northwest Methodist, 5200 Riverside at 1400. Bob McDaniel will be presenting.
Open discussion from floor
o George Petershagen stated that he lost one if his best friends. Leonard Stefanelli was George’s Godfarther and the president of Sunset Scavenger
a trash company in San Francisco. Leonard served aboard submarines and was instrumental in preserving the Pampanito memorial.
o George also handed out a Funeral Planning Form to make it easier for those left behind to know the wishes of the deceased.
o Richard Doritty mentioned that veteran’s families should be asking for a military funeral. Most don’t know they can.
o Galin mentioned that Allegiant Airlines honors veterans by not having them spend extra money on different types of services.
