Clarence O. "CO" Smith
It's my sad duty to inform you of the passing of our shipmate and World War II Submarine Veteran Clarence O. "CO" Smith, who embarked on Eternal Patrol Saturday 12 June 2010. Sailor, Rest Your Oar. Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home 215 North Walnut Street Bucyrus Ohio 44820 is handling the arrangements. Smith, age 89, Saturday June 12, 2010 Date: He died Saturday June 12th, 2010 at 2100 hours (9 p.m.) in Bucyrus Community Hospital. Personal Information: Clarence was born March 23rd, 1921 in Bucyrus to the late Homer and Inez (Bunn) Smith. He married Doris Louise Sullivan June 18th, 1946. Mr. Smith retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base as an Instrument Maker in 1977 and moved back to Bucyrus after retirement. He was a 1939 graduate of Bucyrus High School. A WWII Navy Veteran, Clarence served on numerous Submarines during WWII. He received the Submarine Combat Medal with 2 stars, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific, American Theater, and Good Conduct Medal. Clarence was a Life Member of VFW Post 1078, American Legion Post 181, and Amvets Post 27. He was a member of U.S. Submarine Veterans WWII and served as State Commander from 1975-1980 and as State Treasurer as well as being the former editor of the “Buckeye Boater” and State Record Keeper in 1995. Clarence was also a member of the Fairborn Eagles and the Moose Lodge. Survived By: Clarence's wife: Doris Smith survives him along with one daughter: Alice (Stephen) Cooper of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two sons: Bruce of Fairborn, and Jeffrey of Magdalena, New Mexico; one son in law: Jeffrey Grodell of Brecksville, four grandchildren: Christopher Grodell of Cleveland; Sean (Sophia) Cooper of North Grafton, MA; Erin (Rian) Cooper Black of James Island, South Carolina; Lizette Grodell of Brecksville, six great-grandchildren: William, James, Noah, and Isaac Cooper; Isaiah Grodell, and Logan Black. His parents preceded him in death along with one daughter: Carol Grodell, two daughter-in-laws: Gail Smith, Mei Hui Smith, and one brother: Robert Smith. Funeral Services: Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home in Bucyrus is handling the arrangements. A memorial service will be Tuesday June 22nd, 2010 at 1300 hours (1 p.m) at the funeral home with Reverend Gene Ballard officiating. Friends may call Tuesday June 22nd, 2010 from 1200 hours (noon) until the time of service at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be in the form of contributions to Gifts for Yanks or the Crawford County Humane Society in care of Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home 215 North Walnut Street Bucyrus Ohio 44820.
