Sea Story Bump in The Night
Subject: Genuine Sea-Story (listen up fellas)

Dave Creekmore Here is a sea-story comprised of some e-mail exchanges involving a USS NATHANAEL GREENE (SSBN-636) patrol in 1974. Our Columbus Base Shipmate Dave Creekmore was a crewmember of the Blue Crew aboard that vessel during that period. Following is the Tom Carr exchange of e-mail messages that make up a very interesting account of a very concerning incident known only to the Russians at that time.
An interesting series of emails has past through my computer in the last couple of weeks. Rather than try to summarize the content where I might change the intent or read “between the lines”, I feel that the emails make record enough. This is an amazing story that must be shared with the crew of the 636. Tom Clancy couldn’t write this and Hollywood couldn’t produce it, reality exceeds fiction again. Gentlemen, this is why the USS Nathanael Greene Reunion Association was formed! Tom Carr

Submarine Service And the Baker's Boy Went To Sea, Book Review
BakerBoys Cover Bernie's Review of

"And the Baker's Boy Went to Sea" by Mary Cummings

This old subvet read this book in 3 hours and found it to be a very good book for a number of reasons.

One is the author's use of approximately 25 side-bars to describe in more detail certain topics within the text which should make any reader feel like they have a very good understanding of the basic operations of a submarine when they are finished reading her novel.

Another reason for my liking the book is that it gives one of the most important members of a fleet-boat crew, the ship's baker, his long overlooked recognition as a key morale builder amongst the crew. Imagining the smell and visualizing the hot rolls and freshly baked bread that I remembered during my time on the 12 to 4's certainly added to my reading pleasure!

Mary Cummings makes sure, however, that we understand that the ship's cooks and baker had other duties to handle just as every other member of the ship's crew did in operating the boat. Her understanding of that aspect and including them in her narrative's WWII battle action makes her book worth the reading.
